Reflections

Learning without reflection is a waste. Reflection without learning is dangerous." Confucius

  • Reflections

As raindrops fall upon the pool
    They shatter what was there
They break apart a quiet thought
    With gentle care

Rippling mirror — a fleeting view
Magic reflections — where one becomes two
Wonderful pictures — some old and some new

When you see them for the first time
    You stop and stare
And knowing they will come again
    Leaves promise in the air

    The water glimmers brilliantly
    A boy casts his line
Time to wonder, time to dream
    Time out of mind

Shimmering silence — a memory born
Honest reflections will always be warm
Magical feelings take shape and form

When you feel them for the first time
    You feel good inside
And you later wonder why they try
To break your heart open wide

Some things rise up from the past
    And bring good feelings alive
Some pour salt on open wounds
    To see if you’ll survive

Sometimes you don’t know what you would find
If you looked deep into your mind
To touch the remains of forgotten time

    When you catch a moment,
    Hold on tenderly
Don’t let it pass your fingertips
    So easily

When you see reflections of yourself
You smile and then you cry
    Remembering the good and bad
And the dreams you left behind

    You look into the mirror
    Innocently
To see the face of one you met
    Recently

Asking questions to find out more
Trying to get behind every closed door
But what is it you are searching for?

    Questions asked and answers found
    But still there’s nothing gained
We all have the good and bad
    To us forever stained

When raindrops fall upon the pool
    Reflections disappear
You then look up and wonder
    Why you were ever here…

  • Hidden Logic

    Mother
Why did you say I couldn’t go out tonight?
There must be a reason that my mind just cannot see
I will find out why you always say ‘no’ to me

    Mother
Why am I never to talk to strangers?
Is there something that my mind should be telling me?
Is everyone that I don’t know out to get me?

    Please won’t you tell me
What it is you think I should know?
There are some things in this world
    I just don’t understand
It’s your job to give me a helping hand
    Show me that you care
Tell me so I can see
    The hidden logic in the
    Wisdom that you share

    Mother
Am I the actor or the audience?
Should I repeat my lines so all the world can hear?
Or should I just sit back and take it all in through my ears?

    Mother
Have I been put here to kill or stay alive?
They each go hand in hand so I don’t know which way to turn
Help me to decide, teach me so I can learn

    Mother
Will you show me everything that’s wrong and right?
Will you show me when to take a dive and when to fight?
Help me when in trouble, give me guiding light

    Mother
I sense there’s someone watching in the night
I feel the power growing and it scares me to the bones
    Hold me with a Mother’s love so I don’t feel alone…

  • Spirits

    Behind every dream
    Stands a special part —
    Something that’s strong
    Beneath everything
Lies a key — to start
    Guiding us along

    To desire is human
    To achieve divine —
Need some help to get there
    A spirit drives inside

    Indecision
    Tires our souls —
    With each step we take
    Our feet get cold —
    Got to believe
    Got to be bold…

    Once in a while
    Something flames within
    Giving us a reason
    To strive for more
    And be just a little
    Better than the rest

    We were given power
    To control our lives —
For us to reach our goals
    The spirit must survive

    Motivation
    Fires our souls —
    With each breath we take
    Dreams take hold —
    Got to believe
    Got to be bold

    Feel your power
    Feel your dream
    Got to be bold
    Got to be believe…

  • The Host

    I feel the winter coming
    I feel the cold
    I sense a storm approaching
But I’ll just turn my back
    And close my eyes…

    When first the Earth
    Gave birth to days
We took to it as our own
When the sun shone on our faces
We knew we’d be going places

    As the world turns
    Things come undone
    Actions go unchanged
    Songs go unsung
So much time spent finding the cure
    No moments lost
    In stopping the cause

    We drain the life force
    That gives us life
    We tire the strength
    Of Creation
    Turn on our machines
    And close our minds…

    Waiting out the fools
Who wait for others to change their ways
Mother sits and folds her arms
    And turns off her alarms

    Concern — misguided hope
    Takes a final curtain call
    Mother’s hope for a future
    Bows with it all
On who’s shoulders does the burden fall?

We stand and watch our own decay
As we dig down to the bone
    Finding our niche
    In the depths of despair

    Silent
    Cold
    Alone

  • Visions

I have visions in my dreams
Of lonely people on lonely streets
I have visions in my dreams
Of quiet schools with empty seats

I have visions while I work
Of scattered people in scattered towns
I have visions while I eat
And it’s too late to stop it now

    Something will happen
I have foreseen a sudden change
    Something strange is coming
And no one can stop the pain

    I’ve envisioned many things
And they have all come true
And this, my friends, is just the same
We’ve played our hands and lost the game

Some say “Let there be peace on earth”
But what they have in mind
Is a piece of a different kind

    There’s peace among friends
    And foes alike
But I speak of shadowed silence…

  • Unsacred Domain

    On a dark desert highway
    There’s nothing in sight
And there is no light to aid view
    All you can see is
What’s right in front of you
    Your headlights don’t reach
As far as you want them to

    And then
Just like a flash of light
It jumps out from the right
And you can’t stop in time
    You try
To veer off to the side
    But the road’s not wide
And you can’t stop in time
    You can’t stop in time

    You spend a day alone
    In the desert sun
    You can’t find an animal
    Who’s days are done
    They know when they’ll die
So they go off someplace and hide
    Never to be found again

But as you drive on synthetic streets
You never think of what you’ll meet
Until you see such tragic death

    Your favorite feline friend
    Walks across the street
To get something to eat tonight
    It heard the screaming tires
    And saw the blinding lights
    It couldn’t react
It just stood in frozen fright

    And then
Just like a flash of light
You jump out in the night
    (This happens all the time)
    You stop
    And stare at the man
With your friend in his hand
Who said, “I couldn’t stop in time
    I just couldn’t stop in time…”

  • For Awhile

I hear the wind cry silent screams
    All alone to me
I feel its pain — its tears, my rain
    My heart bleeds for thee
Help me grow stronger all the while
    Give me your smile
Sing to me a bit longer, stay awhile
    Give me your smile

I long to be a contented one
    Traveling all the Earth
    Finding my way through
    All shades of gray
    Through solemn nights
    And lonely days
    I hear the cries of
    Empty hearts in misery
    Calling to me

I see the rage of souls encaged
    They call to me
I feel their pain — my tears, our rain
Our hearts bleed for all to see
Help us all grow stronger, so we can smile
    Give us awhile
Sing to us a bit longer until we smile
    Stay with us awhile…

  • Glass Dreams

Spirits stem from the roots of desire —
Some as strong as the sea
    Some others still
    A bit more fragile
And a few that will never be

    The ones with power shine
    With blinding light
While nothing can stand in their way
Serving as the source of strength and purpose
Leaving nothing to be led astray

A few that want to have the might —
Searching for the strength to be bright —

Tragic it seems are the fragile dreams
    Without purpose in their tread
    Ready to shatter
    At the first stone thrown
Or collapse at the first thing said
    But once in a while
    Something ignites the flame
    And pushes that soul ahead

Spirits arise from the ashes of fire
To restore all that is destroyed
    Some others still
    A bit more tired
And a few that are null and void

The ones without substance are never heard
Any confusion will drown them out
    Serving as stones
To be picked up and thrown
At the dreams that show some doubt…

  • Never Too Late

Once in time we took a step
    Across forbidden lines
To see the sights beyond the lights
And the world that we might find

We stopped and stared at what we saw
    Amazed and mesmerized
    Afraid and paralyzed
    Bound by our freedom
    Chained by fear
    Should we turn back
    Or venture on

So often we feel we’ve gone too far
To turn back and start again
As we believe we’ve made a vow
To get in high over our heads
But it’s much too easy to turn around
And go back the way we came
It’s never too late to make a change
It’s never too late to change

Trapped in time, we feel alone
No one to help us escape
We struggle and fight to make things right
To turn our crooked pathways straight…

  • Take a Hard Look

One day goes right on into the next
    An example of infinity
Every passing moment’s a forgotten dream
    Done away with easily

Miscalculations are the key to knowledge
    Imprinted forever in mind
Take a hard look at the world around you
    Don’t leave anything behind

    Look in the mirror
    What do you see
    Get a little closer
    Do you agree?

Take a hard look and tell me what you see

Live the present, prepare for the future
    Forget about the past
Do now the things that you enjoy
Don’t save the best for last…
