The Way Things Are

Is it only a coincidence that animals need oxygen and plants need carbon dioxide, and that each gives what the other requires?

  • Constant Change

By the hands on a clock
The time of day appears to change
    Different by the minute
Beckoning the seconds to tick away
    Here we go ’round again
    Will the changes ever end
Or will they stay the same
    As they’ve always been
    Changing. Changing.

Changing into things we’d like to see
Moving to places we’d like to be
    Places. Places.

    Faces of those we know
Cruel or kind, friend or foe
    Talking with strangers
    Listening alone.
    Alone.

    Change the condition
    Strengthened by superstition
    That says there’s no need
To be like all the rest

    Constant time, constant space
A constant fear, a constant place
    Constantly changing

Changing the way we use our time
Changing the way we change our minds
    Dreaming. Dreaming.

Dreaming of faces that we know
Cruel and kind, friend and foe
    Dreaming of strangers
    Dreaming alone.
    Alone.

    Staring at a clock
Thinking about the time of day
    Twenty-four before
The hours hadn’t sadly ticked away
    Here we go, bound again
    Let the changes never end
Hope that we don’t stay the same
    As we’ve always been —
    Constant. Constant.

    Constant soul, constant heart
    Constant people, a world apart
    Constantly changing…

  • Lights

    Stars of white
    Flickering bright
    Angels to guide our way
    They give us sight
    In a darkened night
And sometimes take our breath away

They help us on our journeys
Turn on when we are home
    Save us from the demons
    While we’re sleeping alone

    Together and apart
They share a common heart —
    To help us to pretend
That the day will never end
    Searching for darkness to overcome
Fighting to reach the eyes of some

    Shining sparks
    Spirits of dark
    Traveling beyond
    Forever free
    For us to see
    Sailing on and on…

    They bring life to motion
    And emotion to our lives
    We panic without them
For without them we are blind

    During the day
    We’re kept in the dark
From what is wrong and right
If we know what we believe
    And believe what we’re told
How will we ever see the light…

  • Slipping Away

Time and again we find ourselves
    Slipping into something real
    Letting go of imagination
    Losing the creative feel

We tangle on the red tape
    And we lose control
We gamble our hearts and minds
And we sell our souls —

    Stumbling around
    From day to day —
    We trip and fall
    Then we just slip away

Torn from the flesh of fantasy
Pulled from the mind of make-believe
Knocked-out by the punch of sanity
    Slipping away

    Musician, painter, poet, author
    Losing that special touch
Eyes with the ability to see
What the world misses so much

    We’re cast into confusion
The world — a state of mind
    Pushing away creation
How much are we leaving behind?

    In touch with the world
    In sight, in sound
    Involved and bound
    On a merry-go-round…

  • Give Me Something to Sing About

Give me something to write about
    Give me something to sing
Been racking my heart and my head all day long
And I just can’t find anything

I’m tired of singing of broken hearts
Or the woman I had last night
I’m fed up with singing about
The world’s constant struggles and fights

I just want to sing something
    That everyone will like
And not have to sing the blues
    I want you to listen
    To what I’m singing
And not stare at my blue suede shoes

I don’t want you to hear me because it’s cool
Or because your friend told you to
And I don’t want you to listen because
    You want to be different
Listen ’cause you like the tune

Give me something to write about
    Give me something to sing
I’ve been scratching and searching all day long
    And I just can’t find a thing

I don’t want to sing about rock ‘n’ roll
Or a fast car that I’ll never have
I don’t want to sing about a place that’s not there
    Or a world that’ll never be…

  • The Vehicle

    A body walks the earth
    Aimlessly
    Naive of the things
    That it sees
    Missing the single element
    That separates the beings —
The ability to share with others
The songs it wishes to sing

    Mind in matter
    Helping the other to grow
    Mind using matter
To learn the things it wants to know

    Vehicle in motion
    Transporting thoughts
    Expressing ideas
    Of immobile minds,
    Immortal souls —
    Through companionship and loyalty
    Experiments and curiosity
    They both shall thrive
    To keep the other alive

    Now it can travel
    The universe
    And wonder about the things
    That it sees
    In contact with the elements
    And knowing what they mean
Is a part of the world’s perfect pair
And the world that they share…

  • Method to the Madness

    Simplicity beyond expression
    Ideas beyond control
    Foresight into the master plan
Which not even you can know
    So no one can understand

    Hoping it will come together
Praying it will all work out
Putting to work the master plan
    Using the easiest route
Doing the best that you can

For there is method to the madness
    A scheme beyond compare
    There’s system to the chaos
    Of which you are unaware

    A shining hope — a brilliant star
    That you can’t believe
    A quiet thought — a brilliant dream
    That you can’t retrieve

Searching for minds that know the scheme
To help you in your quest
To make the master plan seem clear
    Putting it to the test
To place contentment much more near

Once in a long and lonely thought
    Something guides you along
The master plan comes plain to view
    Though others thought you wrong
    For courage manages the new

    Victorious in your struggle
    Of effort by dreams born
    Glorious in your battle
    Between the love of vision
    And of system scorn…

  • Empty Streets

    Dust-covered dirt
    Rolling tumbleweeds
    Shadows of unlawful deeds
    Lonely winds fill
    The hollow days
    Showing how the earth decays

    At one time people filled
    These empty streets
They never knew who they might meet
    But as time went by
    They disappeared
Along with the outlaws that they feared

    Empty streets —
    The world goes on
    For it is strong
    Live and let die
    As time goes by
    The world goes away
    But comes back another way

    That scene from another time
    Can’t predict what
    We will find
    No one knows
    Nobody knows
What the world will leave behind

    Only time can tell
    How things will be
When the world sets us free
We all know lifestyles are strange
    But when we’re gone
    The world will change…
